RESUMO

Abstract Sexuality changes associated with the medical transition in transgender women are not well known; the few studies present discrepancies in labeling their sexual orientation and controlling surgery conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the self-reported sexual response to audiovisual sexual stimulation protocol in androsexual transgender women on hormone replacement therapy. This study also evaluated their sexual functioning to support the empirical protocol. Participated androsexual transgender women with (n = 16) and without hormone therapy (n = 15) in a non-sex reassignment surgery condition. Androsexual cisgender men (n = 25) and women (n = 24) also were included as contrast groups. All participants were assessed with the Short Form of the Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire; then watched video clips with neutral and sexual content and informed their sexual responses through two self-report scales adapted from the Film Scale. The results showed trans women with hormone therapy, compared to trans women without treatment, experienced a less selective sexual response to sexual stimuli. Also, they registered the lowest scores for every sexual functioning except for pleasure. In conclusion, transgender women on hormone therapy without sex reassignment surgery showed fluidity in their self-reported sexual response and reduced sexual functioning.

Introduction: The benign lesion, called angiomatoid nodular sclerosing spleen transformation, is a rare lesion described for the first time in 2004, until the year 2017 there are only 100 cases reported. This entity has been recognized as a splenic non-neoplastic vascular lesion of benign evolution located in red pulp and secondary to an exaggerated stromal proliferation. The majority of the patients are asymptomatic, of incidental diagnosis, the same one that is established by Tomography or Resonance. The definitive diagnosis of this pathology was made by anatomopathological and immunhistochemical study after splenectomy. Clinical case: The case of a 78-year-old patient was reported, with an incidental diagnosis that was made outside the institute, which shows magnetic resonance, whose report indicated a tumor of 8 by 9 cm in relation to the spleen and thrombocytopenia in the laboratory. Microscopically, it was a well-defined lesion, not encapsulated, formed by multiple angiomatoid nodules. Evolution: Currently the patient in controls without signs or evidence of tumor recurrence, in controls in the department of digestive surgery. Conclusion: SANT is a rare vascular entity with specific histological and immunological characteristics; formed by angiomatoid nodules constituted by capillaries, venules and sinusoids. Currently, it is considered a splenic non-neoplastic vascular lesion of benign evolution located in the red pulp and secondary to an exaggerated proliferation of the stroma. The treatment of choice of this histological entity is splenectomy.

RESUMO

2-Heptanone (methyl n-amyl ketone) is a ketone that produces alarm reactions in insects (e.g., bees and ants). As an olfactory stimulus, 2-heptanone produces anxiety reactions in the short term and despair in the long term in rodent models. Among the anatomical connections of the olfactory system that integrate behavioral responses, connections between the amygdala and nucleus accumbens are important, which in turn form a circuit with the ventral tegmental area (VTA). 2-Heptanone increases the firing rate of amygdala neurons without participation of the vomeronasal organ. The olfactory amygdala-VTA-nucleus accumbens circuit may integrate defensive behaviors, but the possible actions of 2-heptanone on the responsivity of VTA-nucleus accumbens connections have not yet been explored. In the present study, multiunit activity recordings were obtained in adult Wistar rats from the core and shell subregions of the nucleus accumbens during electrical stimulation of the VTA under basal conditions and later during simultaneous stimulation of the VTA and olfactory exposure to 2-heptanone. 2-Heptanone reduced the responsivity of the VTA-nucleus accumbens shell but did not influence the responsivity of the VTA-nucleus accumbens core. The lower VTA-nucleus accumbens shell excitability may be related to a primary defensive warning when exposed to an alarm pheromone.

RESUMO

Wireless Sensor Networks deliver valuable information for long periods, then it is desirable to have optimum performance, reduced delays, low overhead, and reliable delivery of information. In this work, proposed metrics that influence energy consumption are used for a performance comparison among our proposed routing protocol, called Multi-Parent Hierarchical (MPH), the well-known protocols for sensor networks, Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), and Zigbee Tree Routing (ZTR), all of them working with the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer. Results show how some communication metrics affect performance, throughput, reliability and energy consumption. It can be concluded that MPH is an efficient protocol since it reaches the best performance against the other three protocols under evaluation, such as 19.3% reduction of packet retransmissions, 26.9% decrease of overhead, and 41.2% improvement on the capacity of the protocol for recovering the topology from failures with respect to AODV protocol. We implemented and tested MPH in a real network of 99 nodes during ten days and analyzed parameters as number of hops, connectivity and delay, in order to validate our Sensors 2014, 14 22812 simulator and obtain reliable results. Moreover, an energy model of CC2530 chip is proposed and used for simulations of the four aforementioned protocols, showing that MPH has 15.9% reduction of energy consumption with respect to AODV, 13.7% versus DSR, and 5% against ZTR.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Paragangliomas of the head and neck are neuroendocrine tumors and are associated with germ line mutations of the tricarboxylic acid cycle-related genes SDHB, SDHC, SDHD, and SDHAF2. Hypoxia is important in most solid tumors, and was directly implicated in tumorigenesis over 40 years ago when it was shown that dwelling at high altitudes increases the incidence of carotid body hyperplasia and paragangliomas. Although recent research has now elucidated several pathways of hypoxia in paragangliomas, nothing is currently known of the genetics or of gene-environment interactions in high-altitude paraganglioma. We postulated that SDH mutations might play a role in these tumors. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Patients from a Mexican family, originating and resident in Guadalajara, were tested for mutations of SDHD, and subsequently, for mutations of SDHB followed by immunohistochemical confirmation of SDHB loss. RESULTS: Two patients, born and resident at altitudes of between 1,560 and 2,240 m, were found to have head and neck paragangliomas, including a remarkably aggressive recurrent tumor. Mutation analysis identified a pathogenic missense mutation in exon 7 of SDHB, c.689G>A, p.Arg230His, and loss of the SDHB protein was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a SDH gene mutation in paraganglioma at high altitude. A rapidly recurrent head and neck paraganglioma is a very rare finding in an SDH mutation carrier, suggesting a gene-environment interaction. Neither patient showed evidence of sympathetic paraganglioma.
